6 Hidden Waterfalls in the Soča Valley

Beyond Kozjak and Boka — lesser-known falls in the Soča Valley worth the detour, with honest notes on access and timing.

Everyone finds Kozjak and Boka — and they should, they’re spectacular. But the valley hides plenty more water if you’re willing to take the smaller turn-offs. Here are six worth the detour.

1. Boka — the giant

At around 144 m, the highest waterfall in Slovenia, on the Bovec–Žaga road. Roadside viewpoint, or a steeper trail to a closer platform. Spring is when it roars. (Full guide linked below.)

2. Kozjak — the cave chamber

A 15 m fall in a rounded rock amphitheatre near Kobarid, 25–30 minutes on foot from the Napoleon Bridge. The most photogenic fall in the valley.

3. Virje — the gentle one

A wide, soft fall dropping into a turquoise pool near Bovec, with easy, short access from the road. Calmer and prettier than dramatic — good with kids.

4. Mlinarica Gorge falls

Near Trenta, up the valley toward Vršič. The gorge approach is rougher and can be closed by rockfall — check locally before committing.

5. Šum (and the smaller Trenta falls)

The upper Trenta valley hides several smaller cascades along marked paths near the source of the Soča. Quiet, and often you’ll have them to yourself.

6. Gregorčič / side-stream falls near Drežnica

The hills above Drežnica and Kobarid carry seasonal falls that run hard after rain and snowmelt and quieten in summer. Worth it when the water is up.

One thing ties all of these together: the turquoise comes from limestone rock flour suspended in the water — fine particles ground from the karst, not glacier melt. There are no glaciers here.

Timing, honestly

Most of these are karst-fed, so flow swings with the season. Come in spring or after rain for the full show; a dry August can leave the smaller ones as a trickle.

FAQ

Spring (April–May) during snowmelt, and after heavy rain. Many karst-fed falls shrink or nearly vanish in a dry late summer.
