Tolmin Gorge: A Complete Walking Guide
The Devil's Bridge, the Bear's Head boulder and the warm spring at the lowest point of Triglav National Park — how to walk Tolmin Gorge and what not to get wrong.
Tolmin Gorge (Tolminska korita) is the lowest point of Triglav National Park and one of the easiest ways to feel the raw force of the Soča’s tributaries up close. Two rivers — the Tolminka and the Zadlaščica — have cut deep, narrow slots through the rock, and a well-built circuit threads you between them.
The highlights
- Devil’s Bridge (Hudičev most): a road bridge soaring around 60 m above the gorge floor — a vertigo-inducing look straight down.
- The Bear’s Head (Medvedova glava): a large boulder wedged between the canyon walls overhead, jammed there and never having fallen through.
- The Thermal Spring: a warm inflow at around 20 °C. It is milder than the icy river, but it is not for bathing — it is a curiosity on the trail, not a soaking pool. Don’t plan a swim here.
- The confluence (Dante’s Cave area): where the two streams meet at the bottom of the gorge.
Walking it
The loop takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, with stairs, narrow ledges and uneven stone. It is not difficult, but it is not a stroller route either — wear shoes with grip. After rain the rock gets slick.
Know before you go
The gorge typically closes for winter and reopens in spring; opening dates shift year to year with conditions, so check before you drive over. There is an entrance fee, and the car park sits right at the trailhead near Zatolmin.
The emerald water here is the same story as the rest of the valley — colour from limestone rock flour, not glacier melt.
Combine it with
Tolmin Gorge pairs well with the town of Tolmin and, a short drive north, the Kobarid sights and Kozjak Waterfall.
FAQ
Can you swim in the thermal spring at Tolmin Gorge?
No. The warm spring sits at around 20 °C — noticeably milder than the river, but it is not a bathing pool and swimming there is not permitted. It is a point of interest on the trail, not a hot spring you soak in.
How long is the Tolmin Gorge loop?
The standard circuit takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours, with stairs and uneven paths. Sturdy shoes are recommended.
Is Tolmin Gorge open in winter?
It usually closes over winter for safety (rockfall and ice) and reopens in spring. Always check current opening dates before visiting.
