How to Get to the Soča Valley
Driving routes, the Vršič and Predel passes, the car train through the tunnel, and why you'll want your own wheels once you arrive.
The Soča Valley sits in Slovenia’s far west, tucked against the Italian border behind the Julian Alps. That mountain wall is the whole story of getting there: you either go over it or around it.
From Ljubljana
The usual gateway. Two broad options:
- Over Vršič Pass (summer): the scenic route via Kranjska Gora and 50 hairpin bends over Slovenia’s highest road pass into Trenta and Bovec. Spectacular, slow, and closed/uncertain in winter.
- Around via Idrija/Nova Gorica (all year): longer in distance but open year-round and easier in poor weather, approaching the valley from the south toward Tolmin.
From Italy and Austria
- From Italy (Trieste, Venice, Udine): cross near Gorizia/Nova Gorica and follow the valley up — the lowest, easiest approach.
- From Austria: over the Predel Pass from the Tarvisio area into Bovec, or via the car-train through the Bohinj rail tunnel (Bohinjska Bistrica–Most na Soči), which loads your car onto a train through the mountains — a handy bad-weather shortcut.
Airports
- Ljubljana — most common.
- Trieste / Venice (Italy), Klagenfurt (Austria) — viable depending on direction.
You’ll want a car
Buses link Bovec, Kobarid and Tolmin, but they’re infrequent, and the waterfalls, gorges and WWI sites sit off the main road. Rent a car — ideally before you reach the valley, where options are limited. Mountain passes demand unhurried driving; check seasonal closures before relying on Vršič or Mangart.
