The Perfect 3-Day Soča Valley Itinerary
A practical 3-day plan covering Bovec, Kobarid and Tolmin — waterfalls, gorges, a swim and the WWI front, without rushing.
Three days is the sweet spot for a first visit: enough to cover the valley’s three hubs — Bovec, Kobarid and Tolmin — and its headline spots without feeling rushed. Here’s how to spend them.
Day 1 — Bovec & the upper valley
Base in Bovec, the adventure end of the valley.
- Morning: Boka Waterfall (about 144 m, Slovenia’s highest) — roadside view or the steeper trail.
- Midday: a rafting or kayaking trip on the Soča (remember the 2026 river permit, ~€18–21 — confirm it’s included when booking), or a gentler walk to Virje Waterfall.
- Afternoon: the Velika korita (Great Gorge) near Lepena.
Day 2 — Kobarid, water & history
Move to Kobarid.
- Morning: walk to Kozjak Waterfall — 25–30 minutes from the Napoleon Bridge — and stop at the bridge’s emerald pools.
- Midday: the Kobarid Museum, then up to the Italian Charnel House.
- Afternoon: a calm-water swim near Trnovo, or drive the ridge to the Kolovrat outdoor WWI museum.
Day 3 — Tolmin & the gorges
Finish in Tolmin.
- Morning: Tolmin Gorge — Devil’s Bridge, the Bear’s Head boulder, and the 20 °C warm spring (a curiosity, not for bathing).
- Afternoon: relax by the river, or extend toward the Walk of Peace sites if you want more history.
Tips
- A car is effectively essential; village-to-village transport is thin.
- In summer, do waterfalls and gorges early to beat both crowds and harsh midday light.
- The river is cold all year — that emerald colour is limestone rock flour, not glacier melt.
FAQ
Is 3 days enough for the Soča Valley?
Three days is enough to see the highlights across Bovec, Kobarid and Tolmin without rushing. A week lets you add longer hikes, more remote falls and the high passes.
Do you need a car for this itinerary?
Effectively yes. Public transport between villages is limited and many spots are off the main road. A car makes the valley far easier.
