The Mangart Road: Slovenia's Highest Drive

At 2,055 m, the Mangart road is the highest you can drive in Slovenia — a 12 km toll road of tunnels and switchbacks to a jaw-dropping alpine saddle.

If Vršič is the famous pass, the Mangart road is the secret thrill — at around 2,055 m, the highest road in Slovenia, dead-ending at a saddle with one of the most outrageous alpine panoramas in the country.

The drive

Branching off near Strmec above Bovec, the road climbs roughly 980 m over 12 km, threading five tunnels carved straight into the rock and a series of tight switchbacks with sheer drops. It’s narrow — barely more than a lane in places — with passing bays. A seasonal toll applies to the upper section.

This is not a road to rush. Take it slowly, yield uphill, and use the bays. Confident drivers only; nervous passengers may want to look inward on the exposed stretches.

At the top

The Mangart Saddle (Mangartsko sedlo) opens onto the Julian Alps: Mt Mangart itself (2,679 m) above you, the Loška Koritnica valley below, and Italy’s Fusine lakes to the north. It’s also the launch point for the demanding hike up Mangart — strictly for experienced, equipped mountain walkers.

When to go

Open roughly late spring to autumn, snow permitting. The saddle is high and exposed — weather turns fast, and it can be cold and cloud-wrapped even in summer. Check conditions before you commit to the climb.

Pair it with

Do it on the same trip as the Vršič Pass for a double bill of Slovenia’s highest roads, basing yourself in Bovec between the two.
