Velika Korita: The Great Gorge of the Soča

The Soča's deepest, most dramatic canyon — up to 15 m deep and 750 m long near Lepena. How to walk the footbridges and why you don't swim here.

Velika korita — the Great Gorge of the Soča — is where the river does its most theatrical work. Between Lepena and Soča village, the Soča narrows into a slot canyon up to 15 m deep and around 750 m long, the water turning the densest emerald you’ll see anywhere in the valley.

Walking it

Footbridges and riverside paths let you look straight down into the gorge. The most photographed crossing is the bridge near the Lepena turn-off, where the canyon yawns directly beneath you. Paths along the rim are easy but have drop-offs and polished, slippery rock — keep children close and wear shoes with grip.

You can walk just the gorge in 20–30 minutes, or fold it into the longer Soča Trail that runs the length of the upper valley.

Why not to swim

This is the single most dangerous stretch to enter the river. The narrows funnel the current, the water is deep, and it’s cold year-round — the colour comes from limestone rock flour, not glacier melt, but the cold is just as real. Save swimming for calm, open pools downstream.

When to go

  • Spring snowmelt: the gorge runs loud and high — spectacular, but stay well back from the edges.
  • Summer: lower water shows off the emerald pools and the sculpted rock.
  • Early or late in the day for the best light down in the slot.

Pair it with

Velika korita combines naturally with the source of the Soča and the Soča Trail for a full upper-valley day, or with Tolmin Gorge further south for a gorge-focused itinerary.
