WWI Sites Tourists Miss in the Soča Valley
The Isonzo Front ran straight through this valley. The Kobarid Museum, the Charnel House, Kolovrat's ridge trenches and the quieter places most visitors walk past.
The Soča Valley’s other identity is written into its hillsides: this was the Isonzo Front, where Italy and Austria-Hungary fought twelve battles between 1915 and 1917. Most visitors come for the river and never realise they’re standing on one of the First World War’s deadliest fronts. These are the places to change that.
Start at the Kobarid Museum
The Kobarid Museum is the anchor — an award-winning, human-scaled telling of the front and the 1917 Battle of Caporetto, the surprise Austro-German breakthrough that gave the town its place in history. Go here first; the outdoor sites mean far more afterwards.
The Italian Charnel House
On Gradič hill above Kobarid stands the Italian Charnel House, an octagonal ossuary holding the remains of over 7,000 Italian soldiers. It’s a short walk up from town, usually quiet, and sobering. The view back over the valley is part of the point.
Kolovrat Outdoor Museum
Up on the Kolovrat ridge southwest of Kobarid, restored trenches, tunnels and gun positions sit along an open mountain crest with views deep into Italy. It’s an open-air museum most tour buses skip — often you’ll have the trenches to yourself.
The quieter places
- Mengore and Mrzli vrh: hill positions above Tolmin with remains for those willing to walk.
- Wayside cemeteries and chapels: scattered through villages like Drežnica — easy to miss from the car.
- The Walk of Peace (Pot miru): a long-distance route linking front-line sites the length of the valley, walkable in sections.
Practical notes
- Wear proper shoes for the ridge sites; these are mountain positions.
- Treat the sites with respect — much of this ground is effectively a war grave.
- Combine the Kobarid sights with Kozjak Waterfall, which shares the same car park area.
