The Soča Trail: Hiking from the Source to Bovec

A 25 km riverside trail from the source of the Soča to Bovec — suspension bridges, gorges and emerald pools, walkable in sections or as a full day.

The Soča Trail (Soška pot) is the best way to meet the river properly — about 25 km following the Soča from near its source in Trenta down to Bovec, past suspension bridges, gorges and pools the colour of liquid glass. It was the first nature trail in Triglav National Park, and it’s still the signature walk of the upper valley.

Walking it

You don’t have to do all 25 km. The trail is easily split into sections linked by road and bus, so you can pick a stretch to your time and energy:

  • Trenta to Soča village: the wildest upper section, passing Velika korita (the Great Gorge).
  • Around Soča and Lepena: emerald pools and the famous suspension bridges.
  • Lower stretches toward Bovec: gentler valley walking.

Most of it is moderate and well-marked. Footwear with grip helps on the rooty, rocky riverside bits.

The source itself

The source of the Soča (Izvir Soče) sits at around 990 m at the foot of Mt Travnik. The final approach from the trailhead hut is short but steep and cable-protected — only for those comfortable with a bit of exposure. Everyone else can enjoy the river just below.

When to go

Late spring through autumn. Spring brings high, loud water; summer and early autumn give calmer pools and stable footing. Avoid the high water’s edges after heavy snowmelt.

Pair it with

Walk a section in the morning, then cool off at a safe swimming pool downstream — see the wild swimming guide for where it’s actually safe to get in.
