The Source of the Soča (Izvir Soče)
Where the Soča begins — a karst spring at ~990 m below Mt Travnik in Trenta. How to reach it, and why the final scramble isn't for everyone.
Every drop of that famous turquoise starts here: the Izvir Soče, the source of the Soča, a karst spring at about 990 m in the Trenta valley, below the 2,379 m Mt Travnik. The river bursts out of a cave pool and begins its 138 km run to the Adriatic.
Getting there
From the parking area on the Trenta road (below the Vršič Pass), a marked path leads up toward the spring. The first part is straightforward. The final approach is steep and secured with a steel cable over rock — genuinely a short scramble, and not for anyone uneasy with heights or exposure.
If that’s not your thing, stop at the lower viewpoint: you still see the emerald pool and the river’s first cascade, without the cabled section.
Why it’s worth it
There’s something quietly powerful about standing where the whole river begins — the water already that impossible colour, straight from the rock. The colour, as everywhere in the valley, is limestone rock flour, not glacier melt.
Practical notes
- Wear proper shoes; the cabled section is slick when wet.
- Go in dry conditions — rain makes the final rocks treacherous.
- It’s high and in shade; bring a layer even in summer.
Pair it with
The source is the natural start of the Soča Trail down to Bovec, and sits right on the Vršič Pass route — easy to fold into a day of high-valley driving and walking.
